Computers get better at the Game of Go (aka Wei-Chi and Baduk) And the debate goes on:
An Ancient Game Computers Can't Master (Note Date written: March 31, 2007, now TWO YEARS old!) - by Jan Newton http://www.goddesschess.com/chessquest/goweiqicomputer.html
Humans No Match for Go Bot Overlords (Wired Magazine) - By Brandon Keim March 10, 2009 http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2009/03/gobrain/
For the last two decades, human cognitive superiority had a distinctive sound: the soft click of stones placed on a wooden Go board. But once again, artificial intelligence is asserting its domination over gray matter.
Just a few years ago, the best Go programs were routinely beaten by skilled children, even when given a head start. Artificial intelligence researchers routinely said that computers capable of beating our best were literally unthinkable. And so it was. Until now...

Wei-Chi (aka Go and Baduk) news The Santa Barbara Go Club is active. Ed Lee reports they meet Wednesdays and some Tuesdays at the Borders bookstore in Goleta. - Precise details at http://www.santabarbaragoclub.com
:)
I am sad to report the end of the Rafu Ki-in. I believe it is (was) the second oldest go club still going in the United States and was, at one time, a branch of the Nihon Ki-in and boasted many dozens of members. The membership has aged however, reports member Yuji Tabata and with many members having passed on, it no longer justifies the rent on its current small room of the JACCC building in Little Tokyo.

2008 Go Congress in Portland Southern California sent a respectable contingent, here are some of the highlights:
US Open - New LA Resident MyungWan Kim, 8p, won the US Open, defeating Mingjiu Jiang, 7p, by 1.5 points in the sixth and final round!!!
- In the 8k section, Santa Monica Go Club member Terry McIntyre took 2nd place and Santa Monica resident Eileen Hlavka took 3rd place.
- In the 3k section, Jerry Shen took 1st place.
- In the 2k section, Andy Okun, took 3rd place.
- In the 1d section, Santa Monica Go Club member Cooper Alison-Mayne took 3rd place.
North American Ing Masters Tournament
- Yilun Yang, 7p, took 2nd place, racking up four victories before being defeated by Feng Yun, 9p.
- San Diego’s Xuefen Lin, 1p, took 4th place
- While they did not place, both Gary Shen (father of Cherry and Jerry Shen), and Christopher Kiguchi, participated and scored wins in the prestigious 32-player tournament.
9x9 Tournament
- Tom Xu won the Dan Section
Women’s Tournament
- Dammy Osoba, of the Santa Monica Go Club, took 3rd place in the 3rd Division.
Die Hard Tournament
- Andy Okun took 2nd place in Section C.
Other events and activities …
MyungWan Kim, 8p, lost a 9-stone handicap game by 1.5 points to an 800-processor core European supercomputer running MoGo. David Doshay, a California computer go researcher, said the win was significant not only in itself, but because the Monte Carlo method-based MoGo software showed strong evidence that its strength is dependent on the time and computing resources available to it, meaning it will get stronger over the years as computers get more powerful, without the need for additional coding.
Eileen Hlavka and Andy Okun won their round robin tables in the Lightning Go Tournament, but were eliminated in the playoffs.
Cherry Shen and Richard Dolen were part of the AGA E-Journal team, Cherry reporting on youth activities and Richard recording games for live broadcast on KGS for both the top tables of the US Open and the North American Ing Masters. Richard was the only member of the E-Journal team to win his game, with a four-stone handicap, in the special simultaneous match between team members and Ryo Maeda, 6p, at the end of Congress.
Andy Okun will join the AGA Board of Directors in September.
Santa Monica’s Sidney and Catherine Yuan, of Yutopian Enterprises ran a vendor table, seemingly continuously busy, during the second half of the week.

Wei-Chi (aka Go, Igo & Baduk) Currently I am rated on KGS as 9k. I have been as high as 6k, but only for a few seconds (then I was destroyed by other 6k members and slipped back down to 9k).
I would like to get to Dan level (Black-Belt).
I am considering taking a break from work to study Go seriously. (BTW, have you read "Shibumi" by Trevanian - over 2 million copies sold! - and a movie in the works!!!)
Do you have any crazy life goals?
Please share! Sighris

Wei-Chi (aka Go, Igo & Baduk) - Note to self Note to self: In order for an invasion into a bulky 5 space (eye) to work you must play on the center point (obviously, to prevent your opponent from getting two eyes) AND YOU MUST HAVE EIGHT (8!) LIBERTIES even though they will only have four liberties left after your invasion! Who would have thought you would need TWICE as many as they?!? ( It might seem crazy but it is true. :)

The Ultimate mind training tool! I believe learning to "play" Wei-chi can help you understand Thee Tao and become a more powerful maji.
I just found the below on the 'net:

Go, also known as Weiqi in Mandarin Chinese and Baduk in Korean, is a strategic, deterministic two-player board game originating in ancient China. The game is now popular throughout East Asia and on the Internet...
The strategy involved can become very subtle and complex. Some high-level players spend years perfecting strategy. Go is considered by some to be the ultimate strategy game, superior in depth of complexity to Chess, Xiangqi, and Shogi.
Go is typically classified as an abstract board game. However, a resemblance between the game of Go and war is often suggested. The Chinese classic "The Art of War", for instance, has sometimes been applied to Go strategy as well. On the other hand, general strategies of Go are well described by proverbs and are applied in other contexts such as management.
Real wars end when the participants sign treaties. Likewise, in Go, the players have to agree that the game has ended. Only then are the score and the winner finally determined.
History
In many East Asian cultures, Go was considered one of the most important skills a civilized person could learn....
Nature of the game
Although rules of Go can be written so that they are very simple, the game strategy is extremely complex. Go is a perfect information, deterministic, strategy game, putting it in the same class as chess, checkers (draughts), and reversi (othello). It greatly exceeds draughts and reversi in depth and complexity, and transcends even the complexity of chess...
The above is from a CHESS website: http://www.ficgs.com/wiki_en-go.html
There is a lot more info there! - check it out!
And let me know if you want more info or a lesson/game!
